Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) improves Security and Economy in Energy Poverty Country (Nigeria)

Nigeria, an Energy Poverty Country, a country where her citizens live without access to reliable electricity both in rural and urban areas while rural dwellers lack access to other social amenities such as basic health centre, pipe borne water, good roads, schools, markets etc.

To reduce this menace, the World Bank in partnership with Ekiti State Government funded Community and Social Development Project (CSDP). The project deployed the Community Driven Development (CDD) approach to develop micro-projects to increase access of poor people especially children, youths and women to social and natural infrastructural services.

CSDP was implemented by Foundation for Sustainable Health Promotion and Development (FOSHPAD), the nongovernmental organization identified and supported Irewamide Vulnerable Group to erect 20 Solar Powered Streetlights and drilled One motorized Bore Hole, in Ipole community, Agbado Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria. Irewamide Vulnerable Group is made up of vulnerable people comprising Orphans, Widows, Widowers and People with Disabilities (PWD) residing in the community. They relied on Kerosene Lamp to illuminate their house and communities at night while this dangerous, toxic and also Kerosene is expensive for poor people to purchase in Nigeria.

The project has improved security and economic output respectively. According to the community dwellers the project has ended frequent theft of Cocoa and other goods in the community Cocoa stores as the illumination improves security of the community while traders in the community now spend more time selling their goods knowing fully-well that their markets and paths home are fully illuminated.
