2018 WORLD AIDS DAY COMMUNITY OUTREACH HELD AT ARAMOKO-EKITI, EKITI WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA

1.0      BACKGROUND

WAD started in 1988 by WHO to commemorate millions of PLWHA, people who have died and children that has become orphans due to the complications of HIV

Nigeria recorded her first case of AIDS in 1986 since then the epidemic has ballooned.

Recently, it was recorded that 3.2 Million Nigerians are living with the virus; 2.9% are adult; 31% are on treatment; HIV kills up to 230,000 Nigerians annually according to the fact released by UNAID 2017

In Ekiti State, HIV is increasing silently, the prevalence increased from 1% to 2.9% between 2008 and 2014 with a population of over 2Million. The epidemic reached the base of its trough in 2008 when the prevalence was 1%. Ekiti State is currently one of the states in Nigeria with HIV prevalence below the National average of 3.0% while the current HIV prevalence is 2.9%. The last HIV Sentinel Survey (HSS) in 2014 showed an increase in prevalence rate at 2.9%.

The new HIV prevalence result will be determine by the ongoing Nigeria AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), a national survey that focus on HIV, Hepatitis B and C.

 

2.0      INTRODUCTION

World AIDS Day is a global day mark annually on the 1st of December around the globe. On the 3rd of December, 2018, Ekiti State Civil Society for HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (EKCiSHAN) the umbrella network of all CSOs working on HIV/AIDS and other related diseases in Ekiti State marked 2018 WAD at Fayose Market, Ado-Ekiti.

To commemorate WAD, FOSHPAD organized online and onsite program. From the 5th of November-1st of December, 2018. FOSHPAD Program Officer posted and twitted daily on his Facebook and Twitter account respectively about facts on HIV tagged #DailyBreakFact to educate the public on care, support, treatment, diagnosis, prevention, management and other information about HIV/AIDS and STIs.

On the 5th of December, 2018 Foundation for Sustainable Health Promotion and Development (FOSHPAD) in partnership with Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development with the support of Ekiti State AIDS Control Agency (EKSACA) and Ekiti West Local Agency for the Control of AIDS (EKWLACA) commemorated WAD at Aramoko-Ekiti to educate people in the grassroot on how to use and insert condom, educate them to stop discrimination and stigmatization against PLWH, possible means to contact and prevent HIV and while is important to know their status following the theme for 2018 WAD

 

3.0      OBJECTIVES OF THE EXERCISE

To commemorate WAD at grassroot

To educate people to shun discrimination and stigmatization against PLWH

Conduct free HTS for young people to know their state

Demonstrate how to use and insert both male and female condom

Educate the public about Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U)

To achieve 90-90-90 target by 2020

Using Social Media to disseminate facts about HIV

 

4.0      ONSITE AND ONLINE PROGRAM

4.1      ONSITE ACTIVITIES

4.1.1  ADVOCACY VISITS:  The two organization paid advocacy visits to EKWLACA and community stakeholders such as Commercial vehicle drivers, community leaders, Okada riders and others. The visit was done to keep the stakeholders aware so as to support the program, they assured their support and also pledged to mobilize residence of the community to participate in the exercise.

4.1.2  SENSITIZATION: General Population were sensitized about HIV/AIDS, they were directed to where free HTS was ongoing to know their status, many people were reached they were given free male and female condom, how to insert and use condom was demonstrated, IEC materials was also distributed

4.1.3  HTS: During the HTS 51 young people between the age of 15-50years comprising of 21 male and 30 female were all tested negative.

5.0      CHALLENGES

Male condoms were inadequate for distribution

It was self-sponsored we were unable to reach more population

1-day was not enough, HTS should be continuous especially for Most at Risk Population (MARPs)

All reproductive age that are not computer literate cannot access our daily facts about HIV on Twitter and Facebook

 

6.0      SUCCESS STORIES

Adequate arrangement made by EKWLACA personnel

Community stakeholders mobilized community members for the free HTS

Youths were eager to know their status, they collected collect free condoms for prevention

NACA, APIN, SFH, MSH Nigeria, AIDS Delaware and other Implementing Partners (IP) hit like and rewetted our tweets “#HIVDailyBreakFact” on twitter

 

7.0      RECOMMENDATIONS

Training of CSOs working on HIV/AIDS so as to educate more people about the virus

CSOs needs support from Donor, Government and Implementing Partners (IP) to sensitize Key Populations

Test kits, condoms, consumables, IEC materials are not adequate to reach General and Key Populations
